Online will services have made basic estate documents cheap and accessible, and that is genuinely a good thing. A simple, valid will costing very little is enormously better than the alternative most people default to, which is nothing at all.
The difficulty is that the marketing rarely distinguishes between situations where a template does the job perfectly well and situations where it produces a document that looks correct, feels reassuring, and fails at exactly the moment it matters. Those failures do not surface during the drafting. They surface years later, in front of a court, when the person who signed it is no longer available to explain what they meant.

Situations Where a Template Usually Suffices
A straightforward estate with a simple structure often does not need custom drafting.
If you are unmarried or in a first marriage with children only from that marriage, holding assets in one jurisdiction, with no business interests and no beneficiary who needs special provision, a well prepared standard will and matching powers of attorney will typically do what you intend.
The same applies where the whole estate passes to a spouse and then to shared children, with values comfortably below any applicable tax thresholds.
In these cases the greater risk is not the document’s simplicity but its execution. Signing and witnessing requirements are jurisdiction specific and technical, and a valid intention expressed in an improperly executed document is not enforceable.
Situations Where It Usually Does Not
Blended families are the clearest case. Providing for a current spouse while ensuring children from a previous relationship eventually inherit requires structure that a simple will does not provide, and getting this wrong is one of the most common causes of family litigation.
Business ownership adds succession, valuation, and continuity questions that a personal will cannot address alone, particularly where partners or other shareholders are involved.
A beneficiary with a disability receiving means tested support can be seriously harmed by a direct inheritance, which may disqualify them from benefits. Specific trust structures exist precisely to prevent this, and a straightforward bequest can undo years of careful planning.
Property in more than one jurisdiction, particularly across national borders, brings conflicting legal systems into contact and reliably requires professional handling.
Estates approaching relevant tax thresholds, beneficiaries whose circumstances warrant protection from creditors or divorce claims, anticipated family conflict, and any situation where capacity might later be challenged all argue for professional drafting and, importantly, professional documentation of the process.
What You Are Paying For
The document itself is the smallest part. The value is in the questions asked before it is drafted.
An experienced practitioner will ask about second marriages, estranged relatives, beneficiaries with difficulties, business interests, and property you forgot you owned. They will notice that your retirement account still names a former spouse. They will identify that assets titled jointly will pass outside your will regardless of what it says.
They also handle coordination, which is where most self prepared plans break down. A will, a trust, beneficiary designations, and property titling all have to point in the same direction, and each one drafted in isolation can quietly contradict the others.
And they provide a record. Where a will might later be challenged on capacity or undue influence grounds, a documented professional process is substantially more defensible than a form completed at a kitchen table.
Choosing Someone and Understanding the Cost
Look for practitioners who work in this area specifically rather than handling it occasionally alongside unrelated work. Relevant certifications and professional memberships exist in most jurisdictions and are worth checking.
Ask how fees are structured. Flat fees for defined packages are common and make budgeting straightforward. Hourly billing suits complex or unpredictable matters. Either is reasonable; unclear billing is not.
Ask what is included beyond drafting: coordination of beneficiary designations, funding a trust if one is created, and future updates all matter, and trusts in particular fail routinely because assets were never actually transferred into them.
Many practitioners offer an initial consultation at low or no cost, which is a reasonable way to assess both the complexity of your situation and whether you can work with the person.

The Part Everyone Postpones
Estate documents are prepared for a situation nobody wants to contemplate, which is precisely why they get delayed indefinitely.
The practical counterweight is that the cost of not having them falls entirely on people you care about, at a moment when they are least equipped to absorb it. Probate without a will is slower, more expensive, and distributed according to a formula that may bear no relation to your wishes.
