A television that stops working ends its story, from the owner’s perspective, at the curb or the depot. What happens next is a supply chain in reverse, and it is considerably longer and more complicated than most people would guess. Devices collected in one country are routinely dismantled on another continent, and the conditions at the far end of that chain vary enormously.
Understanding where material actually travels is what separates a genuinely responsible disposal decision from one that only feels responsible. Two collection points on the same street can send identical material down completely different paths, and nothing visible to the person dropping off a device distinguishes them.
The human dimension is what makes the e-waste environmental impact of these flows more than an abstract accounting question. Where processing happens informally, the people doing the work absorb the consequences directly, and they are frequently among the least protected workers anywhere in the chain.
How Material Leaves Its Country of Origin
International agreements restrict the movement of hazardous waste across borders, and electronics containing lead, mercury, and certain flame retardants fall within scope. In practice, enforcement is uneven and the rules contain a significant gap: equipment declared as functional and intended for reuse is treated differently from waste.
That distinction creates an obvious opening. Containers labelled as working equipment for secondary markets frequently contain a substantial proportion of non functional devices. The working items are sold, and the rest becomes a disposal problem in a jurisdiction with fewer controls and no responsibility for having created it.
Volume makes inspection impractical. Port authorities cannot open and test a meaningful fraction of what passes through, and documentation is easy to prepare and hard to disprove without physical examination. Investigative tracking studies that place location transmitters inside donated devices have repeatedly found equipment turning up thousands of kilometres from where it was collected, in places the collector never disclosed.
What Informal Processing Actually Involves
Informal recovery is driven by economics rather than ignorance. Circuit boards, copper wiring, and aluminium casings all have real market value, and extracting them without industrial equipment is possible if you are willing to accept the methods.
Burning insulation off wire to recover copper is the most common technique and one of the most damaging. Open combustion of PVC and brominated plastics releases dioxins and furans, compounds that persist in the environment for decades and accumulate in fatty tissue.
Acid leaching recovers gold and other precious metals from boards. Performed without ventilation, containment, or protective equipment, it exposes workers to strong acids and produces liquid waste that typically goes into the ground or the nearest watercourse.
Manual breaking of cathode ray tubes and older screens releases leaded glass dust and, in the case of some backlights, mercury vapour. The work is often done by hand with no respiratory protection.
Studies of communities where this processing concentrates have documented elevated levels of lead and other contaminants in soil, dust, water, and in the residents themselves, with children showing the highest exposure. The contamination does not stay within the processing area. It moves into agricultural land, local food production, and household dust.
The Same Materials Handled Properly
None of this is inherent to recovering value from electronics. Formal processing achieves better material yields than informal methods precisely because it uses controlled equipment rather than fire and acid.
Enclosed shredding with dust capture, mechanical separation using density and magnetic properties, and controlled smelting recover a higher percentage of the metals present than open burning does. Emissions are captured and treated rather than released. Workers operate with ventilation and protective equipment, and residual waste goes to engineered containment rather than a riverbank.
The obstacle is cost. Formal processing requires capital investment and ongoing operating expense, which means it cannot compete on price with an operation that externalizes every cost onto its workers and its neighbours. That price gap is why certification and enforcement matter, because without them the cheapest option is consistently the most damaging one.

Choosing Where Your Devices Go
For individuals, certification is the practical filter. R2 and e-Stewards both require documented downstream tracking, meaning the processor must be able to show where material goes at every stage. Neither standard is perfect, but both are meaningfully better than an uncertified operator whose downstream you cannot see.
Be cautious with collection drives that emphasize convenience and say nothing about processing. Free collection is not automatically suspect, but a provider who cannot describe what happens after pickup is asking for trust they have not evidenced.
For organizations, contractual requirements are the strongest lever available. Requiring named downstream facilities, audit rights, and documented final disposition puts real weight behind the commitment. Providers who cannot meet those terms tend to say so quickly.
Reducing the Volume in the First Place
Every device that stays in service is one that never enters this chain. Repair, battery replacement, and software support extend working life at a fraction of the environmental cost of replacement, and the same applies at organizational scale.
Purchasing decisions shape what is possible later. Equipment with replaceable components, available spare parts, and long support commitments can remain useful for years past the point where a sealed unit would be discarded. Right to repair legislation is gradually improving availability of parts and documentation in several jurisdictions.
Genuine reuse also works, provided it is genuine. Donating functional equipment to an organization that will actually use it keeps the manufacturing investment in circulation. Passing broken equipment to a programme that cannot repair it simply moves the disposal problem to someone with fewer resources to handle it.
The Point of Knowing This
The path a discarded device takes is invisible to the person who discards it, and that invisibility is precisely what allows the worst outcomes to persist. Asking where material goes, and choosing providers who can answer, is a small act with a disproportionate effect, because it is the demand for verifiable processing that makes verifiable processing economically viable.
